Day 4: National Focus - Euthanasia, Assisted Suicide and Suicide
Euthanasia, now legal in several countries, is illegal in Britain. Pressure for its legalisation has steadily increased in recent years. So far no British Government has been prepared to make euthanasia legal.
There is constant pressure from groups favouring legalised euthanasia for the legalisation of assisted suicide as a first step towards having euthanasia made legal. Assisted suicide bills in Parliament have so far been unsuccessful. There has been too much focus on what is being called a 'right to die' and too little thought given to understanding what dying is and how we deal with it. As we pray for these issues, remember to keep in the front of your mind that our God is a healer, He gives life and He gives each breathe we breath.
Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the UK. Suicide is often link with mental heath conditions, as well as drug and alcohol abuse and is intricately linked to hopelessness and low self worth. As we pray, we are lifting up each person struggling with suicidal thoughts, asking that God would intervene in their lives, bringing hope and comfort. We also want to pray for those people and organisation who are seeking to support those suffering, that God would resource and equip them and give them strength.
But as for me, I trust in You, O Lord;
I say, “You are my God.”
My times are in Your hand;
…Make Your face shine upon Your servant; Ps 31:14-16
Lord you are the one who forms the spirit of man and watches over man's spirit. You are the Lord who gives life and preserves life.
We declare that our times are in your hands. We declare that your word is living and active, sharper than any two edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing between soul and spirit, joint and marrow. We declare that you encounter us spirit to spiritand are yearning to do so up until the last breath leaves our bodies. You are bringing comfort and refreshing to those at the end of their lives through your people working in the field , caring for those in palliative and terminal care.
We bless you with being those who are chosen to be with those who lack peace and to take the peace within you and share it with them. We blessyou with an anointing in your spirit to open closed doors of other people's spirits so that the peace, truth, lifeand freedom you carry reaches into their spirits. We bless your people to be those bringing light to those who find themselves walking in darkness.
