Learning to sit at His feet

A leader once asked me what my name meant and I hesitantly said that I knew it was the name of a place in the bible - Bethany. A few days later she felt the Lord highlight to her the meaning of my name and wrote it on a note for me.
Just as Mary of Bethany loved to be at the feet of Jesus, your greatest satisfaction and fulfilment will be at the feet of Jesus. You are a LOVER first. Enjoy being in His presence, and everything will work itself out from that place. Learn to enjoy BEING a daughter and a beloved rather than working or striving to do anything. Your love is fragrant and it will reach many to come to Jesus!

As I read the note and the scriptures, I began to desire this extravagant devotion that the Lord is inviting us all to come into.

She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.
— Lk 10:39
One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.
— Ps 27:4

I began to want to have this same desire as Mary of Bethany, who would ‘sit at the Lord’s feet listening to what He said’ (Luke 10:39), however I was like Martha who was ‘distracted by all the preparations that had to be made’ (Luke 10:40). I had no idea how to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to Him, to dwell in his presence, to seek His face and to gaze on His beauty (Ps 27:4).
I was familiar with the story of Jesus visiting Mary and Martha and often felt convicted in areas where I was striving and doing. Growing up in church meant that I had a similar attitude to Martha and saw other areas as more important than dwelling in His presence. I grew to value the acts of service and wanting to do things from my own strength over the importance of dwelling in a place of intimacy with my beloved. Yet the Lord who is so faithful, never stops pursuing us and showing us how much more of His goodness there is. Slowly I began to see how the Lord needs to be the One Thing in our lives and only He can fully satisfy.
My heart therefore began to change as it was suddenly captivated by the devotion and heart posture Mary carried. I began to pray and ask God to help me grow in my desire to want Him more. I would ask the Lord to help me choose Him over the busyness of life. I began to pray that Psalm 27:4 would be my prayer, that the ‘one thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.’ (Ps 27:4).
Bethany was a place where a young woman lived a life of extravagant devotion to Jesus and because of this revelation I felt the Lord call me into a season of worship and prayer because He is beautiful and so worthy. However we have all been invited to enjoy being a son or daughter and to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord. Whether in our own secret place or in the prayer room the Lord desires for us to seek Him like Mary did. He is longing for us to choose Him and to sit at His feet and listen because He has so much to share with us. His heart is for us to choose what is better, because He knows this is good for us, and this cannot be taken away from us. Our beloved is pursuing us daily to seek His face, to dwell in his presence.

Choose to spend some time sitting at his feet today, even with all the many things going on. He wants you to come to know His heart.
